U.S. Senate Advances Resolution to Limit Trump’s War Powers

Telesur English 8 January 2026

On Thursday, the U.S. Senate advanced a resolution aimed at limiting U.S. President Donald Trump’s ability to take further military action against Venezuela

“The Senate just passed a bipartisan vote signaling deep concern about Trump’s continued military actions regarding Venezuela. Americans don’t want us to ‘run’ Venezuela and they deserve to have their voices heard,” Andy Kim, a Senator for New Jersey, posted on X.

“In a major rebuke to President Trump, the Senate just voted to advance Senator Kaine’s measure under the War Powers Resolution to remove U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities against Venezuela (52 for, 47 against). The measure still faces floor debate and a vote on final passage,” Dylan Williams, a former U.S. Senate staffer commented.

“This measure is a rare bipartisan rebuke of the administration’s unilateral actions… and reflects growing congressional concern about expanding U.S. military involvement without legislative approval,” journalist Brian Allen explained.

“All Senate Democrats supported the resolution. Five Republicans joined them: Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Todd Young, and Josh Hawley. It still faces further votes and would likely require overriding a presidential veto to become law,” he added.

“The American people have said clearly and repeatedly that they do not want us dragged into new foreign wars, especially wars of our own making,” said Senator Addam Schiff, underscoring the importance of the Senate’s Venezuela War Powers Resolution.

While Washington deliberates on the limits of its actions, Caracas forcefully reaffirms the unyielding sovereignty of the Bolivarian nation. Venezuela has consistently maintained that its foreign policy and internal security are matters exclusively for its government and people. They are not subject to external decisions or impositions of foreign parliaments.
