US Signs One-Year Extension of AGOA
The United States has signed a one-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, providing short-term duty-free access for African exports to the US. The move offers some relief to exporters but raises questions about long-term economic stability and South Africa’s role amid strained relations with Washington. Joining us now is Professor Patrick Bond, political economist and distinguished professor of sociology at the University of Johannesburg, to discuss what this means for Africa’s trade, investment, and economic sovereignty

Calls to halt Glencore's coal exports to Israel
As my colleague stated earlier today, we are here at the Melrose offices of Glencore where pro Palestinian officials and organizations have come to protest against [cheering] Glencore for supplying coal to Israel. What they say is contradictory to South Africa's actions for taking Israel to the ICJ in protest against what they deem a genocide for Gaza. I'm here with Thiago Ávila. He is the coordinating member for the Global Sumud Flotilla from Brazil. Thank you so much for taking time to speak to us today. My first question is what brought you to South Africa to come and protest here at Glencore?

Solidarity with striking Shenzhen Yilisheng factory workers
A week-long strike by an electronics factory’s largely women workforce has captured attention across the country. The strike that erupted on 4 December at Yilisheng factory in Shenzhen, Guangdong, was against what was seen as a layoff in disguise. The factory is known as a “women’s kingdom” due to the high proportion of female workers. They demanded the restoration of overtime to guarantee their income or compensation based on their length of service. Not only did all 3,000 workers at the factory initially go on strike, but after key strikers were arrested on the 9th, they quickly surrounded the factory gates, chanting slogans to demand their release. This pressure successfully forced the authorities to release them that evening.

Trump Hosts DRC-Rwanda Peace Deal
U.S. President Donald Trump has brought together the leaders of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda to sign a peace deal in Washington, reaffirming commitments to an economic integration compact and new U.S.-brokered agreements covering critical minerals, security cooperation, and regional partnerships. But while the cameras captured handshakes, gunfire continues in eastern Congo, where clashes between Rwanda-backed M23 rebels and the Congolese army persist. Analysts warn that although such diplomatic moves may cool tensions on paper, they risk placing mineral access and geopolitical interests above the worsening humanitarian crisis on the ground. Political economist Professor Patrick Bond of the University of Johannesburg joins us to break down the implications.

Why the G20 Summit Was A Setback for Donald Trump
Donald Trump skipped the G20 Summit in South Africa, yet tried to assert his influence from the sidelines. He failed. The summit, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa, adopted a joint declaration on day one—despite U.S. and Argentine opposition. South Africa refused to let a junior U.S. diplomat accept the G20 gavel, a snub that underscored Trump’s isolation. Meanwhile, India, Brazil, and South Africa revived the IBSA forum, responding to Trump's aggressive trade moves. Trump’s playbook—pressure, disruption, and absence—was met with unity, resolve, and progress.
