Mexico has urged Washington to conduct transparent investigations after ten Mexican citizens died while in U.S. immigration custody or during ICE operations under President Donald Trump’s administration.TeleSur 25 October 2025

Mexico’s Foreign Ministry (SRE) is pressing the United States for clear and transparent investigations into the deaths of ten Mexican nationals who died either in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or during immigration enforcement operations between January 20 and October 23, under President Donald Trump’s second term.

At a press briefing, Roberto Velasco, Mexico’s Undersecretary for North America, confirmed that one of the most recent cases involved a Mexican citizen who died last Friday

Velasco stated that Mexico has expressed its “indignation and concern” to Washington and continues to follow each case closely under the direct instruction of President Claudia Sheinbaum.

“We have sent diplomatic notes to the U.S. Embassy demanding transparent and thorough investigations to clarify the causes of these sensitive deaths,” Velasco said.

According to official figures, since January, Mexican authorities have recorded 169 ICE operations that resulted in the detention of 2,382 Mexican nationals. Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente added that Mexico has issued thirteen diplomatic notes to the U.S. government protesting the treatment of migrants and reaffirming its commitment to defending their rights.

At least twelve people have died in U.S. immigration detention centers since January, when President Trump began his second term.

“We are defending our nationals, we are defending their rights. We do not agree with some of the actions that have been taken,” said De la Fuente.

The Foreign Ministry also reported that 116,320 migrants have been repatriated to Mexico so far this year, with 93,153 receiving consular assistance.

Human rights groups and international observers have condemned the Trump administration’s renewed crackdown on migrants, including the detention of minors and widespread deportations. The policies have reignited concerns about systemic discrimination and the erosion of democratic norms within U.S. immigration enforcement.
